Assigning & Converting

by Eduardo Angel

Should I assign a profile or convert to profile? This is one of the most common Photoshop questions I get.

The answer is relatively simple: Do you need to tag your document with a specific profile without altering the color values at all? If the answer is YES, then you should use Assign Profile. This command will change the appearance of the image, but will keep the color values the same.

Now, if what you need is to change your document’s color values into another color space, for example from Adobe RGB 1998 to sRGB, while also keeping the color values consistent you should use Convert to Profile. This command will change the color values from the source color space to the destination profile as best as possible without changing the appearance of the color.assignconvert
