Print Publishers going Digital
No dates or time frame have been announced for the project, but its general manager says that as soon as a full color and interactive eReader for magazines and newspapers is announced, publishers want to be ready with a full, exciting, enjoyable experience for readers. Consumers will presumably be able to download magazine and newspaper issues from an online store similar to iTunes or Hulu for magazines. While I am partial to curling up with a magazine than an eReader, it's good to know that the publishers of my favorite titles are committed to working together on a digitized version of magazine content. It will be interesting to see how this new digital medium presents itself in the years to come.

Christmas Trees
Sunset Magazine put together a guide for selecting the proper Christmas tree for your "zone".
Left to Right, Top to Bottom:
1. Alpine Fir
2. Deodar Cedar
3. Australian Black Pine
4. Douglas Fir
5. Giant Sequoia
6. Norway Spruce
Say you don't want a Christmas tree in your yard after the season is over? You might consider getting a living Christmas tree and then gifting it to a friend with ample land when you are through with it. If you are lucky enough to live around Portland, Oregon you can rent a living Christmas tree from The Original Living Christmas Tree Company. For $80 you can have a tree delivered to your home mid-December and picked up on January 2nd. I'd imagine there are other tree renal services elsewhere. If you know of any please post them in the comments!

Hermes Window Installation
This Is Mind Blowing, You Should Watch It of the Day: Check out this surreal store window installation by designer Tokujin Yoshioka for Maison Hermès Japan.
Yoshioka says: "I intended to express people’s daily ‘movements’ with a suspicion of humor. There are moments when I perceive a hidden presence of a person in the movements born naturally in daily life. I created a design where one can perceive someone behind the scarves as if life were being breathed into them."
The installation will remain display through January 19th, 2010.

Assigning & Converting
by Eduardo Angel
Should I assign a profile or convert to profile? This is one of the most common Photoshop questions I get.
The answer is relatively simple: Do you need to tag your document with a specific profile without altering the color values at all? If the answer is YES, then you should use Assign Profile. This command will change the appearance of the image, but will keep the color values the same.
Now, if what you need is to change your document’s color values into another color space, for example from Adobe RGB 1998 to sRGB, while also keeping the color values consistent you should use Convert to Profile. This command will change the color values from the source color space to the destination profile as best as possible without changing the appearance of the color.

Walmart wants to urn your business
The world's largest retailer wants to keep its customers even after they die.
Wal-Mart has started selling caskets on its Web site at prices that undercut most funeral homes, the major sellers of caskets.
The move follows a similar one by discount rival Costco, which also sells caskets on its Web site.
Wal-Mart put about 15 caskets and dozens of urns on its Web site last month.
All sell for less than $2,000, except for the Sienna Bronze Casket, which sells for $3,199.
Caskets ship within 48 hours. Federal law requires funeral homes to accept third-party caskets. AP

Metadata in State Documents Is Public Record, Court Rules
October 30, 2009
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/10/metadata
Arizona’s Supreme Court, in a surprising but welcome ruling, has declared that electronic metadata is part of the public record under state law, in a case involving an Arizona police officer who suspects his superiors of backdating a document related to his work performance.
Phoenix, Arizona, police officer David Lake had filed a federal lawsuit against the city alleging employment discrimination.
He’d also filed a public records request to obtain documents related to his work, including notes written by his supervisor documenting his performance. When he subsequently sought the electronic metadata for the records, because he believed at least one of the paper documents had been backdated, the city refused.
The city argued that metadata — digital information that can reveal when a document was created and subsequently accessed or modified — was not part of the public record. Releasing such information to the public would result in an “administrative nightmare” and force public officials to spend “countless hours” trying to identify the metadata, the city claimed.
Two lower courts agreed with the city, noting a distinction between “record” and “public record.”
But the state Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that “if a public entity maintains a public record in an electronic format, then the electronic version, including any embedded metadata, is subject to disclosure (.pdf) under our public records laws.”
Supreme Court Justice W. Scott Bales wrote in the ruling that metadata “is part of the underlying document; it does not stand on its own. When a public officer uses a computer to make a public record, the metadata forms part of the document as much as the words on the page.”
The court responded to the city’s claim that supplying metadata would place an unnatural burden on city workers by noting that the request for metadata could easily be satisfied by supplying requesters with documents in their original electronic format, rather than printing them out.
Several media organizations, as well as the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, wrote an amicus brief in support of Lake’s request.
“The decision is important because we live in an electronic age where maintenance and preservation of public records in electronic format is quickly becoming the norm,” said David Bodney, who helped write the brief. “Public bodies should not be permitted to withhold that information from public inspection.”
Although the ruling applies only in Arizona, the case could influence other courts. The Supreme Court in Washington state is set to hear a similar metadata case.

AE in Times Square
By Bruce Horovitz, USA TODAY
Tuesday, AE (AEO) will announce plans to turn the 25-story electronic billboard above its flagship store at one of the world's busiest intersections into a social-media icon. Anyone who buys something in the store beginning Nov. 19 can have their photo and a message posted on the billboard within 15 minutes of the purchase.
As the critical holiday shopping season kicks off, marketing is all about going viral. The chain will nudge customers to snap a photo that marks the moment and to share it with friends via Facebook, Twitter or any social media. Like all teen-targeting retailers, AE is pushing the marketing envelope to get teens to chat about the brand online.
The idea: You don't have to be a celebrity to have your mug posted at Times Square.
"Narcissism knows no bounds in Times Square," says Tim Tompkins, president of Times Square Alliance, which represents area businesses. "I suspect this will become part of the Times Square experience." He says roughly 500,000 people walk through Times Square daily.
